"Love, Queens who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder"

is a choreopoem written, compiled, and produced by Jamila Capitman & Heather Thomas of Raw Fruit. This piece was inspired by Ntozake Shange’s “For Colored girls...” in an aim to create something timeless that speaks to the issues that audiences really care about. We wanted to shed light on an often overlooked reality about who we are as a community by speaking from a perspective that was honest - our own, as women of color. The piece consists of poetry that touches a range of issues, from sexual abuse to gun violence. It was important to us to represent the diversity of this perspective by using different voices, and also show appreciation to these great women who inspire us and give us permission to call ourselves artists. We as Black women must continue being the storytellers, even when it is painful. This piece is a contribution to the legacy of Black art as political action and it is dedicated to Ntozake Shange, and all people. Everywhere. Especially those who suffer from injustice.
