Jamillah Harris

Jamillah Harris (author of “I’ve Been Meaning To Tell You”) is an 18 year old poet, writer and singer. She is a member of the Philadelphia Youth Poetry Movement, the 2009 Philly Youth Slam Team, The Lyrical Playground, Arts and Spirituality Center (We the Poets and Heart Speak). Jamillah grew up in North and West Philadelphia, where she always paid close attention to life. She found enjoyment in writing about the things around her, what she would describe as “typical ways of being an African American” such as: poverty, horrible public schools, finding salvation at recreational centers and public pools on long summer days, and huddling close to space heaters in the winter. Luckily, her mother taught her the value of education, and because of this, she is now an advocate for strong women and a vessel for her generation to speak through. She believes in saving the lives of people through writing and speaking, and plans to do this for as long as she can.
